What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
For nerves to function without pain they need to glide and be free of increased pressure. The Median nerve is one of the major nerves that provides function in the hand. It travels from your arm into your hand and sends branches all the way to your fingertips. As it passes from the forearm into the hand, the median nerve travels through a space called the carpal canal. Within the canal, the nerve shares space with the finger flexor tendons. The space is fixed and cannot stretch or expand. If the tendons become swollen or inflamed, or if arthritis begins to make bone spurs in the undying carpal bones the space begins to get tight. The increased pressure causes the hand to feel numb and tingle, similar to when your foot “falls asleep” in a movie theater.
Numbness and Tingling in Hands
Patients often need to shake the hand or open and close their fist to get the symptoms to resolve. Often this strange and painful feeling can occur while sleeping. This causes people to wake several times at night. If the tightness worsens it can lead to muscle weakness and permanent damage to the hand's strength and function.
Symptoms of carpal tunnel include:
- Pain or a burning sensation in the fingers
- Numbness or tingling in the fingers and hand
- Electric shock-like sensations in the fingers and wrists
- Weakness of the hand and fingers when pinching or buttoning shirts
- Loss of fine motor skills in the fingers
- In some cases, the pain in the fingers and wrists may radiate upwards into the forearm and upper arm
